I'm not sure where you're coming from, but I spent my childhood on Makua beach, and my grandfather lived there. The government removed him and many others from that area in the mid 1990's, threatening to bulldoze their tents if they didn't leave. This government is so concerned about Hawaiians living on the beach, but they don't bat their eyes with the military's complete desecration and bombing of Makua Valley; another place from which Hawaiians were evicted over 50 years ago.

Well, Hawaii isn't gaining independence anytime soon, especially since it holds great geopolitical/strategic importance for the USA. Without Hawaii and all its army bases, the US would have a harder time getting into E. Asia. I highly doubt those people on the beach want to give up their culture and bow down to what they see as colonialist institutions. They probably distrust the schools and all, so its easily understandable as to why they wouldn't use those things.

Hokulani78, I applaud your efforts; I know it can be exhausting. I guess sometimes we have to face the fact that some Hawaiians have lost the connection to their ancestors. Or it could be that some people are claiming to be Hawaiian on Facebook but are really right wing nut cases trying to split Hawaiians.

Ahem. If it weren't for Hawaiians, you would have nothing in Hawai'i and no tourism. Tourism depends on Hawaiian culture. Furthermore, what do you think was in Hawai'i when Austronesian/Polynesians arrived? There was no taro, no sweet potatoes, no crops and no mammals. Look up Hawaiian botany. All of the food crops were brought by Polynesians. The agricultural development of Hawai'i with its irrigation system, the 'auwai, which still feeds people was build by Hawaiians.

These landmarks mean just as much to those citizens as Hawaiis landmarks mean to you. Id hate to see the heiaus desecrated, and torn down. And I do agree with you that it is wrong. I have a hot head, and am very opinionated. I apologize for arguing with you. You have your beliefs and I have mine. Its not my place to try to make you understand what I believe, so Im sorry.
