Sorry, you are wrong, Apple had a GUI interface (with the Macintosh) before Microsoft had a GUI with Windows. But of course Xerox developed the GUI first, but didn't market it. Microsoft is good at marketing and they also allowed Windows (and DOS) to run on IBM clones, that is why there are more Windows machines than Macs now. In the early to mid-80's, Apple was much bigger than Microsoft, but the tide turned after Windows started running on all the PC clones.

I think if a group of people spend all day working on something and want you to pay for their hard work, you have a choice of paying or pirating. It's not so simple; its a matter of ideology. Apple follows Steve Jobs' vision which has always fundamentally favored tight hardware/software integration. Gates has always led MS the opposite way towards a loose coupling & platform independence. If you've never seen their joint interview from last year please do because this was the central theme. Gates' philosophy has worked better for PCs but Jobs' has worked better for integrated devices like Ipod & Iphone.

how did apple steal anything? people seem to miss the fact that apple and microsoft were working together for a long time on a workable gui interface for micro-computers. neither came up with the idea, but like many things, the innovation comes from refinement, not the invention. MS lost their way when Ballmer was made the boss. Apple survived because Gates has no problem throwing money at good ideas. the mac v pc garbage makes for great bar arguments, but in the real world, it doesnt matter.

BurtWilson1, to answer your question... Yes and No. Intel is the only company in the U.S. that does everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) in-house. For other companies in the semiconductor business, it's a lot cheaper to work together with other plants to help split the cost. For example, IBM works very close with Toshiba in Japan on many of their technologies.

Burt, Very good question. Truth is some do make their own wafers, but most big foundries buy the wafers from specialty companies such as MEMC, Soitec, etc.

Every company has trade secrets or else competitors will just offer the same products without spending R&D money. It is like copying a Music CD is always cheaper than producing a Music CD because you don't need to pay for the efforts other puts in. That's how the music industry loses money to prirates. Semi conductors industry is similar. A lot of the chip foundaries are in foreign countries, so older processes are sold to other buyers, they are not secret, but they are not free either.

absolutely fascinating. Even the process of silicon itself, I have a small understanding of how computer process programming actually works, but the fact that we have so accurately fine tuned the process of digital data... not to mention that we will soon have nano-bot technology, actually there are forms of nano-bots now. simply fascinating. who knew that our creativity and mild intelligence could take us so far.

I read many years ago, IBM was doing research in optical computer. Instead of using silicon, they use some organic gel and lasers to build the computer. Instead of using electrons, they use the interference patterns of light and laser to do computing. I have not heard much since then. I have also read about using carbon atoms deposits to form thin film of diamond crystal for IC chips. Diamond can takes great heat. No cooling required. No news either. Just don't hold your breath.

In my opinion, silicon should have at least a few decades to go. Even if any of the discovery or breakthrough comes out of research stage into production stage today, it will still take a couple of decades to take over the dominance of silicon. Foundary are not cheap to build, if Silicon still fill the demand, it won't go away anytime soon.

truly amazing theory problem with mind it can only look at one aspect at a time so we are creating the interpretation of what is known by subjective experiment in other words we cannot see totality at any one time its only because you are thinking it at that moment in time.its like having a circle of limitation or parameters.and you cannot see outside that circle due to limits of subjectivity experience.and just maybe you cannot come up with an experiment to know what it is

I don't really have the money to pay the flight, but I'd love to see the western US. Made a roadtrip in the eastern US in 2006. Couldn't have better timing. 4th July, Cape Caneveral; once in a lifetime experiance (rocket launch). Anyway, I'll come back in few years.
