yes i see you're point - there were lots of wars soon after. but ww2 finished on august the 15th 1945 and another conflict in the world, the indonesian revolution or something, didn't start until a few days later than that. therefore, for a few days, there was a time without war, equivalent to a time of peace in that sense. when i said free, i meant free of war - in that sense we can achieve freedom but true freedom i understand is not just pertinent to no war.

Give Mr. Gervais some creative freedom! His job is to make things funny, and he isn't way off, because Nietzsche did say those things, and they can be interpreted in a political manner. Gervais simply made this into something funny. It's comedy, not advanced study of the subtleties of Nietzches political, philosophical views.

"politics is a dimension that passes thru everything in life" hmm, i don't know... i don't necessarily dissagree, i'd have to think about it. if you're trying to say that it's an essential part of huamn life, no question. but it is easily ignorable like science for example. i'm lead to believe that it wasn't a particular interest of nietzsche given the little he's written about it and what i percieve to be a shallow analysis of what he has written about politics.

Both Lee Evans and Ricky Gervais are funny as fuck, but they have different qualities. Ricky uses more of an intellectual aprouch in comedy and has faith in his act. And Lee chooses to be a physical comic and often uses material that the viewer can relate to. Both have their strong suits.

I think that Mr. Lakoff's comments have some merit. Conservatives do have several themes that they use to sway public opinion. Really important mention of the discussion/debate that used to be carried on in this country but no longer is about whether God is a loving, nurturing and forgiving God or whether he is a punishing God. One's view of God then is reflected in the family (strict father vs. nurturing parents) and then in political thought, liberal/progressive vs. conservative. Regarding same-sex marriage, he claims "same-sex marriage" is a biased term, while "freedom to marry" is unbiased, even though "freedom to marry" could easily be applied to polygamous marriage rather than SSM. He claims liberals want less intrusive government but supports higher taxation and opposes private primary & secondary schools receiving the same taxpayer subsidation private universities receive. He claims his latest book, The Political Mind, combines objective science with his left-wing political views but gives readers no good way to discern between the two; at the same time, he snaps at anyone who is not able to independently discern between the two. The people that took on sub-prime loans didn't want the interest rates automatically rising, the banks insisted on it. The bank got greedy. Wall street got greedy. If the loans were not automatically set to increase the interest rates, the people that had been making the payments would still be making the payments. I agree sshelly. There was a time US comedy was very tame but in recent years theres been an amazing turnaround and US comedy has become increasingly sophisticated. The UK standards are dropping hence the likes of Russell Brand heading stateside. It is a shame they had to remake The Office for US audiences though... If you really get it that wouldn't be necessary

Ricky did it first, this show was originally performed in 2003, Demetri's was 2004. It's entirely possible that the two comedians happened to come up with the same joke, however- it does very often happen in comedy and it doesn't necessarily mean that one comedian copied the other.

I have seen Ricky Gervais in his role in the BBC original Office series a few times, but have not see him perform a standup comedy routine until I saw "Ricky Gervais - Out of England" on HBO. I have not laughed so hard in years. I suffer from chronic pain, and his humor is great therapy. My favorite part was his thoughts on trying to understand the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme. That is essentially what is in this 4 minute clip. Hilarious! I hope he keeps creating great comedy.
