Is it something about the instrument? It seems as if half my drumming heroes died very, very young (Pip, Al Jackson, Jr., Keith Moon) or had their lives and/or their drumming very severely interrupted by....something (Robert Wyatt, Jim Gordon). Do the drums hit back? Only Elvin Jones lived to a reasonable age and Aynsley Dunbar and Chris Cutler are both alive and kicking (and playing). 5 tragedies out of 8 players is an horrific percentage!

You can record it and play it on the radio like music, but that does not make it any more music than Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern talking over a beat box. Hahaha, "The Beatles were just a band," lyrics from Thou Shalt Always Kill by Dan and Scroob. Music is not defined by the melody it has to offer, the structure of music itself is much more complex than just the melody. Different genres follow different standards and rules, Sinatra and the beatles abided by one set of standards, as apposed to say Tech N9ne or Sage Francis would. That is what gives us "genre," and your suggestion of melody driving music is wrong.
