Even as an Obama supporter, I would like to see more compromise on this. It seems unreasonable to expect that in ten years, we would not benefit greatly from being able to rely on our own oil resource, while at the same time ensuring we invest in renewable, domestic sources of energy (like natural gas and wind). I think he would garner so many more votes if he would expand in this direction.

I'm an ECONOMICS major and i'll tell you oil does not function strictly in terms of supply and demand. Oil is inelastic, our entire infrastructure, cars, food, cosmetics, plastic, all circulate around oil. So we need a serious long term solution, we can't pass down our problems to the next generation!

If republicans say we need to drill how would any public official be against the use it or loose it plan so oil companies would have to drill on land they currently have or they loose it (since the alleged issue is access to more areas to drill, why not agree to use current areas of oil or let them go if nothing is there?). Some numbers for you: World wide demand for oil is apprx. 85 million brls a day. World wide supply for oil is apprx. 84 million brls. A day. This is a deficit of about .012%. Any disruption at all will inflate the price per brl., regardless of the actual deficiency in supply.

Their website says they are drilling in Pennsylvania. Unlike Texas, Pennsylvania probably doesn't have NG collector pipelines every 1000 yards, so they need to wait until they can pipe it out before they bring the well online. This is much the same problem with natural gas found in the deep Gulf of Mexico and in Saudi Arabia. There is no market close enough to make a pipeline viable, so they flare it or re-inject it into the formation. It comes up with the crude, and you can't just release it

No, that's not what Shut-in means. All of our wells are hooked up to production immediately after they are Drilled and Hydro-Frac'd. Shut-in refers to an increased pressure in the collection line. When consumer usage declines, all wells continue to "naturally" push gas through the lines from far below the Earth's surface. Sometimes the wells pressure is not as strong as the pressure already existing in the line at that particular time.

Actually we do abuse our oil. How often do you save plastic containers for reuse. How often to you choose paper over plastic when grocery shopping(or use a re-useable bag). His "experts" must be uneducated. Inflating your tires will not reduce your oil consumption for all circumstances. There are certain terrains that will cause increased oil consumption with "properly" inflated tires. It can also reduce safety. I would rather burn more oil and be safe. I also find it fascinating that they just assume how many people do not properly inflate their tires. You can also think about what could be done if we drill and inflate our tires.

1.2% sounds like the figures that were forcasted by those who originally opposed off shore drilling in the Gulf. 9.9% is much more than 1.2% and if we find that much or more in the off shore Pacific or Atlantic America will save trillions of dollars in foreign oil. Also, alternative sources do not combined do not even provide more than 7% of the total energy consumed by the U.S. 94% of the energy consumed in the U.S. is from fossil fuels oil and natural gas being the major players and coal.

Yes but that is only domestic oil, which is less than 1/3 of our total oil percentage. so yes, 30% of 1/3 of our oil, or 9.9% of our total oil, comes from off shore drilling. Also the new proposed off shore drilling will be only 1.2% of our total oil. Definitely not worth the harm to the environment. You're better off looking for alternative sources of energy.

We get 30% of our domestic oil from off-shore drilling of the Gulf Coast (Texas, Louisiana... ), and that is just the sections that are allowed. That is right, 30% of our domestic oil. I worked on one of these "reentry rigs" for about a week, it way sucked, you only need the kelly to drill when you run into a cement plug that was poured when the well was caped, notice this is not even a A frame derrick I bet its a truck mount rig, the one I worked on had Waukesha engines and if you put them in to much of a bind they would back fire and start running backwards. you run like hell when the blocks start flying down towards the floor.

America reached its peak of oil production in 1970 and was hit with an oil embargo in 1973. We were presented with the same problem decades ago and did nothing about it. There isn't enough oil under American soil to satisfy the level of demand we have here. Oil shale is more environmentally destructive than crude oil production and barely provides a net energy positive.

I am for offshore drilling and here is why. First, alternative fuels are nice and needed but will take to long to have an effect (eventually they will be vital). Second, it may take some years for the our oil to have effect on supply, but the simple talk of drilling drop the barrel price $25. Now if congress could only lift its ban, prices will drop more (using oil speculators to our advantage). Thirdly, our effect on the environment is not as Al Gore says it to be. There are many problems with offshore drilling. First and foremost is that it is further increasing our oil addiction which will result in more emissions and increase the risk for oil spills. Just saying the animals will be fine doesn't mean they will be, it's just a way of comforting yourself to feel less guilty. Additionally drilling offshore will put us in the same situation we are in now with high fuel prices except it will be far worse in the future because the population will be higher.

Yes, we do need to look into new sources of energy, like wind, solar, geothermal, fuel cells, etc. However, none of these technologies are cheap enough to allow us to make the transition right now. It will take several years to further research these technologies and make them cheap enough for the general public. In the meantime, we need to start using our own oil supply so we can stop worrying so much about OPEC and Hugo Chavez and instead focus our effors on developing new energy sources.
