thanks. I'm a just starting to play chess and everyone I play is way better than me. Players who have been in jail and played chess all day, guys who were champs in high school, and a girl whose father was some chess champion in Dominic Republic. I'll take any advice. 3:55-I don't think that's a bright move,white can move pawn A2 to A3...now according to your theory,the best move would be bishop B4 to C5,but again,white moves pawn B2 to B4,meaning you have to move the bishop in a stupid position,either blocking the pawn,defending or doing nothing,while the opponent gains two moves,placing his pawns forward,and doing some pressure on the right side That is,if you value your bishop more than his knight At least that's what I would do if I played white

I've been reading some chess books by famous champions. Tarrasch, Capablanca and Lasker all say that it is unwise for non-masters to disturb the pawn position in front of a castled king early in the game as it sets up a possible attack on the kingside. The squares in front of the pawns are now weakened. Also beginners tend to fear back rank mates by Rooks. Experts know how to prevent them while keeping the King safe.

Nice video. But wouldn't you want to get the King Side pawns up?? Because if you castle and the pawns are still there, it is much easier for your opponent to lure your rook out, then use their rook/queen to checkmate. Believe me, I've seen it, I've done it.

Good, but you missed a few concepts. Like, try to give your opponent doubled pawns(usually with bishop/knight exchanges). Or, wait to castle and be ready to castle on whichever side necessary.

I went to your site to use the endgame simulator and the simulation of this position with K+Q vs K+R has an entirely different setup, and not only that checkmate is possible off the first move. However set it up made a mistake.. You might want to check it out. Position is as follows, Black's King is on f8 while the rook sits on f7, White's King is on d6 while the Queen sits on h3. So as you can see with White to move it's an obvious 1 move mate... Great site though.

I agree with Nimzomyth68. If someone doesn't know about opposition, you can win. But a skilled player with opposition isn't gonna give it up and you're gonna draw. This position is usually reached by trading off rooks so make sure you will have opposition after the trade. Excellent tutorial!

Doesn't the 50-move only apply if a piece isn't taken or a pawn moved? Presumably you aren't suggesting that it could take 50 moves to # with Q&K v K? And yeah, a pawn check at 3:38 leads to either loss of the pawn or stalemate.

I've just finished watching the rest of the video on the website. Luis Coelho is a really great teacher, he explains every idea in full and explores likely candidate moves in every position. He's also very funny and gets involved too, I laughed out loud when he showed a bad rook capture which would lead to getting mated and said "this would give me nightmares for one week - sleepless".

Actually, I find that activating the rook at the back rank(opposite to the direction the pawn goes) is the easiest move to do it with. If the pawn is moved forward, perpetual check begins. If he moves the king in front of the pawn, move the rook behind the pawn to prevent the king from getting out of the way of the pawn and moving the king whenever mate is threatened, moving the rook for tempo wasting when necessary.

The black king should start on d7 because from there it can move to either c6 or e6 after 1. Rd1+, and white needs to know how to win against both of those too. In addition, in your line with ... Ke6 and ...Rb1, after Re4+ Kf5 white wins most easily with Re8.

U people are so stupid!!! The black pawns always promote on the 1st and 2nd ranks. And the pawn can't kill the queen because the pawn is behind the queen!! And about the question which person would move the king to B1. If he didn't he would have to move in front of the pawn and white just brings the king over!! This is a really nice video though! Only some stupid comment posters ruined it by asking dumb questions! I hope u continue to make chess videos!!

the queen needs to move to that square to force the other king to move in front of the pawn. otherwise black loses the pawn. maybe if you listen to the guy you'll learn why the moves are necessary. the b1 move isn't that important, its just to show for example how black can still threaten promotion. and really, i don't see how Kb1 is a "dumbass" move. it's not like black hangs the pawn because the king can always move back to defend the pawn.

If his opponent is down on time, he can try to run out his clock. Even if his opponent is aware of the strategies in this video, forcing him to act fast can cause mistakes like stalemate. If he's not, he might have a difficult time forcing the checkmate before his time/50 moves are up. Not a great chance it will prevent your loss but if it's there, no shame in trying.

I see you use the boxing in method. I use the other method, where you force him back one rank(or file) at a time with the same checkmate position midboard until he goes to the edge and runs out of board. Either way, it is required to place the king in zugzwang to deliver the checkmate. Basically, if the lone king is allowed to skip his turns(assuming he isn't in check) then checkmate would be unforceable.

Very good explaination. This is a very rare position to occur, but I remember years ago I was playing against my computer and this configuaration of pieces occured. I was unable to force mate, so I spent time practicing it. I think I have it nailed now. Thanks for the vid, it clarifies a lot.

TY for sharing this nice game. The FROM is beatable with accurate play, if not unsound, but there are many ways for white to go wrong. GM Larsen played the Bird with good results, but Qside fianchetto by black provides a very strong defense against the Bird.

I think the biggest mistake in the game was for white when he gave up a pawn on 'a' file in order to advance his passed pawn but that move gave black a passed pawn with extra pawn advantage. So eventually passed pawns are exchanged and the side with extra pawn (which is important in end game) won.

Another bad mistake was when you went and moved Rh4. A better move would be to move Re3 followed by Re4xe5. It is IMPOSSIBLE to checkmate you, because he only has a King and Rook that can threaten you. Your h6 pawn made sure of that. You should have just used the Rook to protect the pawn to get a second Queen. But White's position was already messed up (as in he couldn't win at all now) so that wasn't as big as the one I just told you about. I can't remember the other big mistake, lol.

Okay, there was one part when white king was at h2. You should have moved f6, because that would have threatened his pawn and he couldn't eat the pawn because it would be an open check. If he moves Qe2/R to protect the pawn, then you could have moved Rf8, to control that file. But if he moves anything else, then you could take f6 with e5. It would be check, and he's already in trouble. Anything after that would depend on the game and how your opponet moves.

Although I just noticed that it doesn't stop the game in the case of insufficient material. That's a very minor problem though, most intelligent people would stop playing at that point. Another very difficult ending to draw is KR vs. KRPP where the pawns are a and c pawns (or h/f pawns) Black can set up a drawing defense if the pawns are far back enough. I had to defend it over the board this year and lost. :(
